Almost Any New Sensation is Suspicious
These days, the media has called our attention to chemical allergies, immune deficiencies, toxicities, parasites, and energy problems. More than ever we are likely to think we are sick if we have any unusual symptoms.
If we feel tingly and start buzzing when we are lying in bed, we might seek out a neurologist to find out what is wrong after the fifth evening. I have had that experience, lying in bed and believing that there were earthquakes when the only quaker was me.
After several nights of tremors and insomnia, I realized it was not a symptom, but only the movement of my subtle energies. One woman I know went to specialist after specialist, exposing herself to endless diagnoses, and rather painful tests, because she began waking at night, with her body writhing and jerking into strange positions.
Her husband would awaken when she started her sudden movements. He thought it was bizarre, and felt alarmed. He suggested that she go to her doctor and have an examination. She did. She was not feeling ill, yet she was beginning to feel scared. After a thorough examination, the doctor could not find anything.
He suggested a specialist, a neurologist. By now she was feeling apprehensive and a little tired. There were many tests, including a C.A.T. scan, MRI, and thermal analysis.
After six months of increasing worry and expense, they still could not determine the cause of these seizure-like motions. There was some mention of an exploratory brain operation.
That very day, when she tearfully left the teaching hospital with her husband, she impulsively called a friend. This was not a friend she shared with her somewhat older husband. It was a woman she had met at a conference who did psychic readings.
Feeling devious and guilty, she secretly asked for an appointment. By the next week when they met, she was beside herself with anxiety, considering that she might have some rare brain anomaly that would require a long and dangerous surgery.
She was beginning to imagine that her life, so pleasant and healthy up until then, was soon to be over. Her friend told her to sit quietly and turn on a tape recorder. She was not to speak.
